I don't know what can and will I learn from a delux DSLR. But one thing might be is the response time of the shutter will be much faster for the delux ones. I sometimes find it lower model, the shutter response is slower than what I expect.

D40 and D3X use the same niKon lens, should be no difference.
The sensor pixels, yes is different, but for normal views, the difference is not reconizable.

May be the read and write is faster for expensive cameras, I don't know, cause I know nothing about DSLR cameras.

To me, handling is most important ... photography is all about capturing ..  ( somehow, I am still stubborn, refuse to use continue shooting mode .. lol )

Back to the film age, I have a motor for my nikon and never in continueous mode. I use it as a winder.
Agree with you, it is all about the timming of the capture, so I really look for a fast response shutter. My D40 is not good.

I encourage you to see a camera beyond its functions and limitations.  Rather, try to "connect" with it.  Sometimes you are able to connect with a specific camera more or less than others.
