OTTAWA (NEWS1130) - It's official, Canadians will head to the polls May 2nd for the fourth election in seven years.
Conservative leader Stephen Harper announced the date at Rideau Hall this morning, minutes after Governor General David Johnston agreed to dissolve Parliament.
"I met with His Excellency the Governor General, and he has agreed that Parliament should be dissolved. Before I say anything else, I'd like to begin by thanking Canadians for the confidence and trust they have given me and my colleagues over the past five years. It has been a privilege and an honour to serve as Prime Minister."
Harper went on to explain that this is not the time for Canadians to head to the polls because of the fragile economic state of the country.
The move follows a historic vote in the House of Commons on Friday. MPs voted in favour of a Liberal motion expressing non-confidence and citing the Harper government for contempt of Parliament, a first for a national government anywhere within the Commonwealth.
Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has vowed not to form any coalition with the NDP or Bloc Quebecois if there is another minority government.
NDP Leader Jack Layton says Harper's government made everyday life expensive for Canadians, by supporting the Harmonized Sales Tax in BC and Ontario.
He's promising a better life for seniors and a better health care for people nation-wide.
Dosanjh attempts to hang on to Vancouver-South
Expect some aggressive campaigning in the riding of Vancouver-South. It's the riding Liberal MP Ujjal Dosanjh nearly lost by 100 votes last time around.
He admits he's in for another difficult race, as the Conservative that nearly beat him, Wai Young, is running again.
Dosanjh says BC, as a whole, will be a massive battleground. "You're going to see all leaders trek to British Columbia, perhaps more than before."
He's telling people voting for the Tories is like a vote endorsing the most deceptive government in the Western World.
