Paint for exterior door

各位老友記 請問乜牌子嘅油襟D?雨年前用過behr ultra (Home Depot)油車房門, 而家已經有D油peel off 咗! Rona, walmart, canadian tire D 油用唔用得過? Benjamin Moore D forum 話正 (last 耐D)不過$隨時係x2?

請指教

If exterior latex is what you are talking about, I'm using CIL (in HK or UK it's "ICI"). My doors have been prepped and re-painted 3+ yrs ago, still holding up fine.

Problem typically lies in the "prepping" part, for if it's not prepped right, paint will not stick/adhere properly, and will eventually peel off.

I wouldn't be surprised if the high-end, 2-in-1 exterior latex paint such as CIL diamond, Behr, etc. would work just as well (and stays put) for as long as possible.

I know most painters use Ben moore or sherwin williams but frankly, I think they are all more or less the same.

The only difference is the prep work. The more you prep (sand it down, chemically edging (roughening the old paint coating), the stronger/better the new paint adhesion.

I have painted (cover-over) old paint in my house's exterior for more than 3+yrs now (just regular CIL exterior 2in1 paint), no issues at all.

Oh and for washdown(prepping): use TSP (trisodium phosphate) and then rinse clean with water.

It helps to remove grease.

Painter uses high-end paint because that saves their work (and they aren't the one paying).  Less coats are required with the better quality paint.

Thx for the advise. I will drop by HD later today to check out their CIL paints.

@OP: no need to rush over and get the brand, for I strongly suspect that your problem lies on the prepping part (mainly).

My recommendation as follows:

(1) Dulux Diamond exterior (CIL), avail from CIL Dulux paint stores (theres one in Rmd).

(2)Behr Marquee exterior paint

(3)Valspar Duramax or Ultra exterior latex

Thx Quest. Agree with you that prep work is my biggest challenge. First, I sanded with 100 grit sand paper (first with my orbital sander and then sanding block). Next, I filled all the cracks with Minmax high performance wood filler. Then, I sanded again with 220 grit sand paper. However, some of the patched spots still I can feel they are kinda 凸出嚟 (especially those hard to reach area like panels). Should I use a detailed sander to get to those spots? Also for trims, I repeated the above steps. Should I use chemical paint stripper to prep trims for painting? Thx

is your garage door wooden panel type or metal type (clopay)?

Q.

p.s. if it's wooden, it's best to either use a heat gun and use a delicate/detailed contour paint scraper, like this:

alternatively, you can use chemical stripper also but make sure (a) you get lots of air/ventilation, and (b) get extra for it will dry out far sooner than you paint starts to peel.

Once you finished with chemical stripper, wipe it down with a damp rag to raise the wood fibre pores. Then sand it (or whatever you like to achieve smooth consistent finish). Finish it with 220or 280grit wet/dry paper, and then wipe it down with a tag rag.

Then, use those 2-in-1 (primer in 1) type of exterior grade latex paint. If you can, use roller to achieve consistent texture and result. Let dry for 6 hrs under high heat/dry weather, then apply 2nd coat.

2 coats and you'll are fine.

BTW: interior latex paint differ from exterior type by means of (a) exterior contains lots of UV inhibitants within; and (b) 100% acrylic latex exterior paint typically comes with elastomers to keep the paint skin "flexible", to handle the extreme weather (thermal expansion).

Thx Quest. 度門係木嘅。let me try with paint remover first because I bought some from Rona the other day. I went to a Benjamin Moore paint shop today and staff there said the 3 lines ranged from $60 (ben) to $80 (aura) per gallon. At Home Depot, the Behr premium ultra (the one I used 2 years ago on my garage doors) is sold at $54 per gallon and Marquee is sold at $62 per gallon. I am kinda reluctant to use Behr ultra again. In one of your previous message, you mentioned Valspar paint. This Valspar brand is only carried by Lowes Canada, right? I think I will probably go check out the Dulux paint store.

Yes, I have great/consistent results from using ICI/CIL paints so far.

I only went for the mid/high grade exterior CIL paint bought from HD, that's the primer in one type.

I'm not a big fan of Behr, with the exception of Behr Marquee. Valspar is quite decent. CIL/ICI used to be independent until Akso Nobel came along and bought them, and was later (about 1 yr ago) bought out by PPG.

latex paint adhesion is all about prep work. The more careful you work through the prepping (exp. repainting over old stuff), the better it will adhere and stay on.

Also: it's best to check and see if your previous layer of paint is oil based paint or latex paint before you proceed to re-coating:
