Expensive or not is inline with the quality of product. Lots of furniture stores in Rmd sells products made in China but are not exactly inexpensive either plus their QA.... =_="
Years ago, before I became a designer, I bought a coffee table fr the furniture place at Aberdeen. The leg is already broken within 1 yr with minimal usage. I took it back and the manager said nothing can be done. He said: "You know ga la, most of the stuff is made in China, so can't replace ga la..."
If you are a person who don't care for quality as much but just like the style and plan to change furniture often, go for cheap ones but don't put your hopes up for good resell value. (just watch out: sometimes the difference in price between quality and bad quality is very little). You must shop around, feel, touch...to be a smart shopper. Don't let your past experience of seeing a few places that carries high priced products dictates your "feeling" to assume "all" North American made furniture must be expensive.
Like I said, shop around and you will be surprised.

Also it's not about which wood is better. I believe all woods are good for specific products. But the concerns are: a) countries that do not have QA may use types of wood not suitable for certain furniture to cut cost. They just want to use the appearance and cost to attract buyers. Once sold, who cares! B) wood is influenced by weather and moisture. Why certain trees only survive in specific counties? Real stories: i know carpenters who were hired to put together cabinets for clients who shipped them fr china. Dispict warning fr these experienced carpenters, the clients insisted. End result: doors, joints don't fit after arriving Canada.
Some Canadian designs are as good as European ones but not as expensive.
So shop around! Pay attention to trends, sales, etc. you'd be surprised that Europeans buy from Canada as well! ;)
