Call and find out!
Generally speaking, not all of the construction companies unless they are really big, have an in-house designer. They would rather give referrals to designers. However, some will want to make extra money and tell you that they can do design. Just be aware that contractors normally follow orders but are not properly trained and know the latest trends, colors, etc. Also, they might give you a design that can give them more work = extra money making when in fact, you might not need it in your home.
An interior designer who is trained will take time to understand your life style, needs, budget, concerns. They know what style, color can last, what is going to be outdated soon. They also know tips and tricks on saving you money by letting you know how to play up some areas while making not so attractive places look invisible. They know how to prepare your home for long term living or investment. They also have a bundle of resources on where to purchase the most suitable items under your budget. Since they get discounts and can pass it onto customers, so again, the home owners end up saving $. Plus, they know where the good contractors are.
There are many horror stories about contractors never returning, asking for extra money when job is half done, poor workmanship, not insured so sue the home owner when got injured, damage other parts of the home, blah blah blah...
Keep in mind a few things when choosing a construction company. It is in mine and people I know that it is best to get referral from friends that have hired them before. Ask them for a portfolio.
-Don't always think that cheap in cost is the best.
- Ask where the materials they use are from. ie: Canada/China?
-Make sure they will give you a contract explaining the cost, time frame
- Make sure their workers are insured and certified.
Maybe you want one-stop shopping or think you can save some money thus, wonder if the contracting companies will also design. Again, unless you hire a huge firm, it's not always in your best interest as explained above. Having a designer actually put you at ease because they can, after consulting with you, give the design to the contractors of your choice or refer you to some to just work and follow.
Hope that helps. |
