It is really not as simple as just cutting water, electricity and food supply, like what that stupid professor said.
As China's economy expands rapidly, more and more companies will be listed in Shanghai, New York and even Singapore, instead of Hong Kong.
Let's look at how the financial pillar of HK will be affected. The stock exchange, the accountants, lawyers, and stock brokers etc will be affected greatly. HK simply depends on Chinese IPOs. Singapore is more than happy to get all that business.
For example, Baidu.com is listed in the US only, but not in Hong Kong.
Just imagine the likes of China Mobile, China Life, Petrol China etc moving over to Singapore stock exchange, HK's rival.
These companies are already listed in Shanghai and New York. Singapore would welcome all that business.
Now let's look at how the tourism sector of HK will be affected.
China can revoke the landing rights of Cathay Pacific/Dragon Air planes in all Chinese airports. As we all know, China is the second largest air travel market in the world. All Chinese passengers will then go through the major gateways of Guangzhou and Shenzhen airports to other destinations. If that happens, HK airport, hotels, Disney, Ocean Park, and retail will be greatly affected.
Chinese factory products can be exported from the container ports in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, instead of HK. |
