Not necessarily true. According to the record, Diaoyu Island was initially returned back by the States to the KMT government after the WWII. At that time period President Chang didn't claim it back instantly for whatever reason and, even worst, he "promoted" Diaoyu Island as a "common property" between the States and the KMT government, just like Shanghai in the 30's-40's (Maybe Chang is thinking that Diaoyu Island is just a "no man" land and hand it to the States as an indemnity, god knows...)
Anyway, in the early 70's when the Vietnam Warfare is almost the end, the States "rewarded" the Diaoyu Island to the Japs government. Obviously that's a tactical move and it's " mutually" "consented" by the KMT government (weak government doesn't have diplomacy and there is no free lunch in the world...sad).
Within the same time frame, CCP is still under the influence of the Cultural Revolution and can take no further action (The official representative at the UN is still the KMT government).
IMO, just to be fair, CCP/KMT are both responsible at a 30/70 manner. And, the States government is a sly on this matter... |
