Porsche Cajun S.U.V. Could Be Built in China

In a Monday edition of the German magazine Focus, Porsche chief executive Matthias Mueller said that the automaker’s current production capacity at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory was insufficient to meet worldwide sales targets, particularly in emerging markets like China. But as Porsche integrates more fully with its parent company, the Volkswagen Group, the brand might locate production of future models — among them an S.U.V., the Cajun, which will be smaller and less expensive than the Cayenne — in either China or North America.
China, however, seems the more likely of the two, as Volkswagen’s assembly plant in the northeast city of Changchun already builds the Audi Q5 premium compact S.U.V. for the Chinese market. During the Detroit auto show press previews last week, Mr. Mueller said that Porsche aimed to triple the size of its dealer network in China to 100, from 35, over the next three years.
Volkswagen’s chief executive, Martin Winterkorn, had set an annual worldwide sales goal of 150,000 units for the sports car manufacturer, but Mr. Mueller told Focus that with increased capacity, the brand could move 200,000 units. |
