when you use a wide angle, you do want to get really close to fill up your whole frame.

as for distortion, I actually think it's a lovely feature

sometimes, you can't get close to your object. for example, if you want to use a wide angle lens to shoot a nice and wide landscape with a full moon in the middle, the moon will be freaking small. the outcome may be not as good as you see with ur eyes

distortion applies to human face is a diaster

distortion on wide angle lens became a style now.

anyway, i was playing around with the lightroom 3, and the lens profile worked really well, removed the distortion on my picture with just 1 click.

I will probably get a 24mm summilux eventually.

Put your subject in the middle. The effect is awesome. I used to do this for full length Portraits a lot.

I am also a wide angle fan. Much prefer wide look than long look.

The distortion of using a wide for close up portrait and lead to funny (unappealing) effects

It's generally unpleasant (e.g. making the nose alot bigger)

cowboy,  I was about 1 ft from the senor couple, and shooting full frame.  It is the nature of these ultra wides (all photos were in 17-20mm range)  I guess you will need medium format cameras to get wide/thin dof look.  Maybe that is the reason people are still stooding medium format film.

umm...I don't have a lens that wide so I am not sure.  On my 25mm, focusing at 1 feet at f4 would only give you a focus range between 0.5 to 2 feet.
