I don't know, depends on how hard is the table.

If the table is stainless steel, i would probably hide under it.
It's very dangerous to not have something cover your hand as things fall down.  With the chief's method, you are betting nothing falls directly on you that can kill you.

I really don't know which method is better.

There were some chain mails regarding this quite some years ago.  If you do a google search, which I did and spent hours research this topic.  DUCK and COVER is the recommend method for Canada/US, because of the way our houses are build.  However that only applies to the US/Canada, but not other countries.

I think these rules are flexable depends where you are...

if you in a study room where a lot of books high up on the shelves then you need to DUCK under a table.

if you room is a hotel room or nothing above head then you best option is to take cover in door frame and corner of the room where it is the strongest.
