Currency Exchange

Does anyone know is it better to bring CAD back to Hong Kong and exchange for HKD, or should I exchange for HKD here from VBCE or other shops?
whimsical rambling

In my case I have a China bank acct in HK, and my exchange rate (bringing CAD back to HK to convert) is just as good, if not a bit better than doing it locally.

Last time I exchange it in HK....I think the rate is better....

HK rate is better.

You can use HK's Atm. For example, with a TD bank debit card, it only charges $5 CAD per transaction, so I just took out more at a time.

I also convert at a hk bank teller, but you need to have an account. In that case, I asked my relative to help me.

reminder.. you have a limitation of how much cash (total in all currency)  you can bring out of the country.

I suggest you do 50/50, and report to Visa/master before your trip.   I rather use visa to do transaction then go ATM.  ATM not only have surcharge each time, also bank rate for currency exchange is very bad.. Even worse than credit card.

Definitely bring your CAD to HK and exchange with the money changer like 牛記. Vancouver money changers or banks will make a profit of 2 to 3 percent on your money whereas in HK the profit margin is 0.5 percent or even less. Do your own math - you will save a lot money and not get ripped off in Vancouver.

This is not true.  You can bring in OR take out as much as cash you want.  However, you must declare at the border if it is over certain amount.

If you have HSBC account, there is no $5 CAD per transaction fee when using HSBC ATM at HK.  (at least that's true 3-4 yrs ago)

yes. you are right, you can but you need to declare.  which I don't think anyone would like to experience that if not really necessary.
