I had to use my own cameras when I was hired as subcontract wedding photographer, but didn't mind it since I enjoy doing so. So, I think it depends on you.
I think you should claim some allowance for your equipment at an hourly rate or daily rate basis (just like you can claim gas expense for business purpose)...
Your boss will deal with the expense reimbursement with the client. It should be fine if you are not charging them at a ridiculous rate...
Since you have a Caucasian boss, I think it would be far easier and more acceptable to just lay out the facts in front of him, and let him decide. Be open and tell him that there is a difference between the level of equipment you have on your own, and what he uses, but don't make it sound like you are bragging. You might even want to do a quick test shot session and show him the difference between, let's say, 3 different set ups:
1) full lights + good lens + good body
2) good lens + good body
3) his consumer grade stuff
and have him see for himself and decide. If you are not doing a lot of this photography work, I wouldn't mind using my own body and 1 good lens. But if he wants any thing more than that, it is only fair that he compensates you for the equipment you brought.
The most important thing is, show him the options and let him be the judge to decide how much quality he wants.
Why don't you just use the equipment provided by your boss? It is very reasonable and you have no fault at all to use company resources to serve the customers of the company. Ultimately, your boss should be the one cares about the quality the most since it is for his customers. When he raises the concerns about the quality (not as good as using your own lens and camera), then you can explain the reasons and it would be easier to negotiate a deal.
Don't expect Caucasian is easier to deal with and you should still handle the case carefully and properly. You don't want to upset your boss unnecessarily even though the task is not in your job description.
P.S. Once you start using your own equipment before have a talk with your boss, I believe your boss will expect you would continue to use your equipment for the job and it is very difficult to roll back without upsetting him/her.
I've seen the local Ming Pao and Singtao reporters at work before a couple of times, and they were both carrying good cameras / lenses ga wor? I specifically remember one of them (don't remember which one) was using a Canon wide angle L lense (has the red ring in front).
