B.C. New Year's baby arrives just past midnight in Vancouver



VANCOUVER — British Columbia's first baby of 2011, Cayden Wilcott, was born to a Vancouver couple at one minute past midnight on New Year’s Day at B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre.


“We’re just super-excited parents,” said Jennifer Wilcott, holding her six-pound baby boy on New Year’s Day, alongside proud father Casey Wilcott.


Jennifer Wilcott, a teacher at Hellings Elementary in Delta, went into labour at four p.m. Friday.


“It’s awesome and we’re pretty tired. What can I say,” said Casey Wilcott, a Telus employee.


The baby and his mother were both doing well as they met with the media on Saturday in their room at B.C. Women’s Hospital.


“We’re definitely exhausted but I think that is going to be our lives from now on,” added Jennifer Wilcott about her first child.


Their baby was due January 10, so the Wilcotts had never considered the prospect of having the first British Columbian baby in the new year.


“It wasn’t until I went into labour on New Year’s Eve. And then it entered my mind. I wasn’t expecting it or hoping for it.


“It just sort of happened.”

Jennifer and Casey Wilcott welcomed their son Cayden Lee to the world at 12:01am January 1, 2011 at the Women's Hospital & Health Centre in Vancouver, making him the first baby born in B.C. this year.
