having to only go to 5 star establishments...no wonder China's economy is so good nowadays! LOL
Both my relatives were hospitalized in China for food poisoning.
Anyway, in my opinion, having to worry this and that and can't enjoy the food with peace of mind takes the fun out of vacationing when you have to be so worried. While it's understood that anything can happen anywhere, I'd choose to avoid the high-risk countries for vacation...including political unrest places.

Ouch .. no wonder everytime I go China .. kind of 水土不服 .. (but my friends are ok, I guess they are used to it?)

  I go china for cheap stuffs .. not for highend stuff or 6 star hotel ... lol

Lik is right this time, maybe just 水土不服.
You don't see every person in China going to the washroom a few times everyday due to food poisoning.   

We didn't have problems in China when we visited.

You need to stick to five star luxurious hotels, and the highend restaurants.
