Several drownings across Canada mar long weekend
Several drownings were reported across the country on what was a long weekend for many.
Two people, including a teenage swimmer, drowned in southern Alberta lakes and rivers, while a man in Quebec who had been in a canoe died after it tipped over and he was unable to swim to shore.
Searchers in Lethbridge, Alta., on Sunday found the body of a missing teenager in the Oldman River.
Police said the 15-year-old went under the water while swimming with friends after jumping from the concrete and metal support structure of the bridge Saturday night. He had not been wearing a life-jacket.
A 33-year-old man also died after an apparent drowning in Cypress County at a campground near Irvine in eastern Alberta.
In Chelsea, Que., near Ottawa, on a small bay, a family watched in horror as a man drowned after his canoe tipped.
Neighbour Gordon McMillan said the man fell into a stretch of water that was only about 300 metres across.
The 50-year-old had a life-jacket, but police said he had removed it because of the hot day.
Unable to flip the canoe back over, he headed back to the shore.
McMillan said the man was only 12 to 15 metres from the river bank. However, it appeared he got a cramp, then sank.
Emergency services were called, and authorities found his body after a lengthy search. |
