“文藝” I meant “文藝氣息” cultural. Not that 瓊瑤 type of romance seeking 文藝電影.
Why Taiwan has so many 青春片recently. It is all “market driven”. In the 80’s and early 90’s Taiwan movie industry was hit hard by Hong Kong movie. In addition, like most countries in the world, the market is invaded and occupied by Hollywood movies. There was not much movie making left in Taiwan. Like other countries, there was still niche market for Taiwan film even though it is small. To search their own niche to survive, Taiwan turned to making movies of artistic inclined or of local interest. In the last few years, with the rapid decline of Hong Kong movie, Taiwan movies have more breathing room especially they knew that the Taiwan’s primary movie-goer are young people. These 青春片 are mostly made by the young filmmaker, they are closer in age to the young movie-goer. Their box office success rate is expected to be higher. That attracts repeating investment. Making movie is a big investment, you can’t make it without market. |
