Canadians are going Lotto loony.
Saturday's Lotto 6/49 jackpot is estimated at $48 million, the highest ever. But the final amount will likely spike as a result of a surge on ticket sales, says a Western Canada Lottery Corporation official.
People have been lining up to buy tickets and many of them are buying for groups, said WCLC spokeswoman Andrea Marantz. "A lot of people just start playing the game at certain high thresholds. We know that there are groups that get together to buy when, for instance, the jackpot is over $20 million," she said. "You'll see a bunch of people at work all get together and throw a couple of dollars into a pot and buy tickets jointly. Things like that start to happen."
Mark Wiebe, who works at a bioprocessing facility in Saskatoon, said the amount prompted his colleagues to pool their money.
"Well, we all agreed at work it's worth putting money into. It's the first time we did it as a group," he said, adding nobody at his workplace wants to get left behind. "It's just the money that gets people excited and you have to do it. If one person buys a ticket and wins, he's not going to be at work and the [other] guys are."
The largest 6/49 payout was $54.3 million in October 2005. The estimate for that jackpot was $40 million.
