Self-checkout

don't you just get frustrated when self-checkout line up took so long to get thru?

been to ikea and superstore yesterday.

in ikea,
using the self check out which i have only two items.

the 4 groups in front of me when i enter, each of them have no more than 6 items.
and three of the four self-checkout opened
but each of them took more than 5 minutes and one took like 10.

like they don't read the instructions and prepare for it.

the lady flipped a picture frame for many times to find the barcode. the frame has only two flat side.. how hard is that to find it~!!!
and a man kept swiping the card when ask to insert the card.
and the other insert the card when asked to swipe.

and the couple...who took 10min. they actually discuss in front of the screen whether buying it or not..

at the end took me less than a minute to go thru them. waiting for the recipe took most of the time.

in Superstore, people pressed the items against the scanner took so long to get them.
what i do is i find the barcode and face it a inch to the scanner.. it will get thru easily..

but the superstore self-checkout computer is slow which they do not allow you to multi-task ( like one hand scan one hand out into bag)
First law: Every body remains in a state of rest or uniform motion unless it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force.

like safeway, they should get at least a staff to help out at those self check counters.  I notice that in home depot the customers there are very fast and experienced.

Self check out is good for normal products
But it is not convenient for buying fruits , such as oranges , apples  vegetables ... as u have to find out the code ...

I found that at self checkout, if you moved your items in the bagging area (the ones you placed the already scanned) when you still have other items to scan, the machine would freeze and say" unexpected item in the bagging area, please remove the item..." and you could not process anymore; you need to wait until the staff to override it to continue.

That is very frustrating. I just want to rearrange my scanned items in the bag to fit them better, but ended up freezing the till.

Yes most of the self-checkout is slow because of the general public does not know how to scan barcode.
The scenario Tapioca mentioned is the machine suspects you cheat but it just says it nicely.  The shopping basket side and the bagging side is like a 天秤.  What ever weight on the left must be transferred to the right after each scan.  The scanner knows the weight of the scanned item.  If you scan and put the item in your handbag, the 天秤 will lose balance and it will suspect you cheat and then alarm the attendant.  Avoid doing this.  Both sides (metal platform) are a big digital scale.

I think you can do rearrangement in the bagging area as long as you don't scan at the same time.  The machine assumes 1 person operations.

I just found the 天秤 system very stupid la! First, there is absolutely no sign and instruction to tell people how to use it, second, how if the product is too heavy to put on the metal platform but on the floor, then how does it work ah? People who try to cheat are smart anyways, they can cheat no matter what system you have la. this kind of system is to help honest customers and to reduce the line up problem ah mah.

天秤 is almost the only way to make sure people are honest.

For Ikea, they may not use 天秤 method because of their heavy items.  For sure save-on-foods and other grocery stories use 天秤 method because the staff over there told me this story.

Walmart self-check in the US is so much faster and more efficient.
