Genes by itself have the ability to recover from radiation, but it very well depends on the pollution strength for sure...

Food prices are already so high and it seems like they will keep going up.  I repeatly have said that the world population has to decrease by 50%+ to be self sustainable.  That's why a nuclear war that wipes out half of the world might not be a bad thing.

In nature, for the 1st 2 foot layer (top soil) of every acre of farmland there exists 50 pounds of uranium (not concentrate, for sure... ). Having a bag of cigarette gets more radiation than taking x-ray (or = 50 flight hours), talking to cell phone (oops!).... etc.

If a nuclear war of the scale you mentioned has wiped out half of the earth population, I don't think there's any place on the world can produce safety food to satisfy the need of the remaining population...
