Federal government could be toppled today

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Harper government is expected to fall today when the Liberals bring in a non-confidence motion, which the other Opposition parties say they'll support.

The outcome is basically a done deal, with all three opposition parties saying they want to take down the Harper Conservatives. If the government falls, the Prime Minister will make his march to Rideau Hall tomorrow to ask the Governor General to end this Parliament and begin an election campaign.

NDP's Paul Dewar say his team is ready. "We've got money in the bank, got plane booked. We've got lots of people ready to go. We've never been more ready."

This could be the first time since 1979 that a Conservative government has fallen on a non-confidence motion. Election day is expected to be either May 2 or May 9.

Polls give Conservatives a lead

Despite their protests about not wanting an election, the Tories are in a pretty good spot according to the latest polls.

Anything can happen over the course of their campaign, but the Conservatives will enter this race as close to a majority as they have ever been at 43 per cent. That is 19 points ahead of the Liberals.

A lead this large so early may be problematic, according to the president of Ipsos-Reid Darrell Bricker says. "It's not the greatest thing. But if you look at the last election campaign and the parties ended up almost point-for-point where they started the campaign off, so you'd rather have a lead than not."

The poll has also found that up to half the country thinks the budget should be passed to avoid an election
