I was blessed to have the opporunity to attend a Porsche test drive event hosted by Porsche America on last Friday. It was no ordinary test drive, as you get to drive Porsche-s on a race track called Pacific Raceways in Kent, WA
It was a 1/2 day session from 9am-12pm, after a short introduction to some Porsche products like the Panorama and the new Cayenne, we were splited into 2 groups. One group headed over to a simple autoX track, and the other heads over to the race track itself.
My group started at the AutoX setup first. The course was extremely simple. A simple straight to get the car to around 60+ mph, then hard brake before a 90 degree corner to the right follow with another 90 degree right within 2s. It then hit a S curve in steady speed follow with a large U turns before another opporunity to floor the gas pedal push the car to fairly high speed to the first right hand corner again.
We had 3 dif. Porsche to drive, each with just 2 rounds on the course, but I got to drive a Boxster S, Cayman S, and the newly introduced Cayman R which is a track version of the Cayman series. There is no doubt the Cayman R is by far the better handling car compares to both the Boxster S/Cayman S.
After about an hour for the AutoX, we then headed over to the high speed race track. This time, I got to drive a a Panorama S, a Carrera C4S, then the Cayenne.
Start off with the Panorama, it was actully very good, and far better than I expected. I did feel like I was driving a sport car instead of a 4 doors sport sedan. However, as soon as I started driving the Carrera, you can quickly tell that the Carerra was just that much better. The Cayenne, I was driving it with little to expect, but it was very balance and felt alot more solid than my RDX at home.
Now comes the final moment, the most exciting and rewarding part of the day.
We got to ride with 2 Porsche professional race drivers / instructors from Porsche Sport Driving School. I am talkig about real deal drivers whom had done Formula race and GT3 Cups. For more info: http://www.porschedriving.com/Instructor-Listing.aspx
I rode in both the Panorama and the Cayenne which I just driven. I was surprised big time with the Cayenne. It wouldn't went up to at least 120-140mph before the 1st turn, and I think he did much better time than those who track their sport car regularly. It's another prove that cars these days are so good that it's our lag of driving skills that matters. And I don't doubt how Porsche would charge these much with their SUV anymore. |
