Judging from the look, it seems to be fixable. However, Derek's car is about 10 years old; the cost for fixing it is greater than the replacement cost.
Since Derek has sunk in a bit of $$ into the car, he should be able to fight for it if he wants to keep his car. I mean, if ICBC gives me current value of my car, I doubt I can find one in the same condition as my car.
My buddy has his old SC MR2 t-boned. ICBC wanted to total his car (over 15 years old), but my buddy rebuilt it a few years back, and put a lot of money into keeping the car in tip-top performance. ICBC ended up allowing him to have the car repaired at any bodyshop of his choice.
Of course, if Derek has other used cars in mind already... this may well be his opportunity for a change.
