For example, if I go to吳哥窟 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor_Wat), I can feel the 莊嚴, but not 富麗堂皇. And by no means 富麗堂皇=奢侈. Just my 2 cents.

I agree that for one or two temples here are just too 富麗堂皇 and always see them re-decorating. I wonder is it necessary to keep refresh the decoration of the temple non-stopping for more than 10 years?
Gold plated Buddha, grand architecture of the temple has no problem ...if people donated by heart. but the way that 解籤佬 asks for 香油$, I feel quite sick about it.
Yes, everything initiated by oneself and donated by heart is no problem. But if it's requested by other makes people feel uncomfortable, such as 解籤佬 asks for 香油, church pastors ask for 1/10 奉獻...etc.
Try to go inside Richmond 觀音寺, you will know what I mean....
Btw, I think 東蓮覺苑has air conditioning now....but dunno if the actual temple part has ....
I also need to go to Mass inside the small chapel during special occasions (e.g. Easter, Christmas) in my school days. Yeah...it also gets very stuffy inside.
首先,我對佛教教義的理解,都係來自傳統上(屋企會拜吓祖先,拜吓觀音天神地主),文化(電視,由其是係啲武俠片),書籍(金庸啲小說),當然唔可以講得上 ...

I think it's a common mis-understanding of 道教 vs 佛教. ( I tho you pointed out that yourself already)
Like 拜祖先,拜天神地主 is 道教 ceremony.
觀音 is like a special case because both 道教 and 佛教 has 觀音.
my "practice" of 佛教 only limite me to go and visit the 觀音寺 few times a year. Have some quiet time thinking about my life and people around me while lighting the 香. I usually go and have lunch and watch a bit of the 佛教 video program.
I would really want to start reading more 佛學. Oh. I don't think 觀音寺 on Steveston is very 富麗堂皇... I feel peace when I go there.
btw I tho 求籤 is more a 道教 event... and I seldom do that myself. (went to "wong tai sin" with my mom when I was a kid)
