i wish i went to montessori but i didn't come until grade 6...
but my brother is attending montessori. he is in grade 2 and he has been there since kindergarten.  i was surprise how much a 7year old can learn and know. i think it is because of the school...
because my bro has special interest in science. the teacher really encourages it... he pretty much can tell the difference between different kinds of dinosaurs, whales, spiders, etc. the school encourage well roundedness, there was one day my bro started telling us about picasso and he can recognize his style of painting... when my dad went to mall when my bro one day, dad randomly pointed at a painting and ask my bro if that is from picasso to start a convo... he was so surprised that lil kid can actually tell that it is not...

Nikonian: do you mind telling me where do you live? if you are living in vancouver, do you mind telling me which school did you choose?

just wondering for all parents out there...

what age did you start sending your kid to preschool/daycare?
my son is only 1 years old now so i know it's a bit early to worry..but i also know most places require early early registration and waiting lists..so i want to get some opinion

i've noticed that some preschools start at 2.5 years old and some at 3 years old

and...is preschool necessary/mandatory?
or is a playgroup sufficient until they head to kindergarten?

the reason i'm asking this is because i'll probably be moving to taiwan when my son is about 3 or 4 years old...in a way i'm worried if he makes a lot of connections/friends in school here and i have to make him leave halfway, he'll have a hard time settling in taiwan. but i also want him exposed to an english-speaking environment before he turns into a 台客 in taiwan..

I think the appropriate age for pre-school is 4 and 5 (2 years of pre-school).  Unless you have to work, it's not a good idea to leave your child to a caring center when they're so young.

a lot of personal questions here, only you can answer for yourself...

preschool is not mandatory

some places take 2.5 but some places don't, generally 3 and up is OK

playgroup is play only, you might want your kid to learn some basic stuff

don't worry about too much, I don't think there'll be a big problem if you let him go to preschool, normally you only go for a few hours a week.

The reason why we'd like our daughter to join preschool is she will be the only kid in family -- so social skill is important.

3 is a good age to start...sometimes depends on ur child...some of them are capable of going to montessori from 2.5

Nikonian, would you mind telling me which two preschools you registered if you live in Richmond?  We are also doing some research about the preschools for enrolment in September.

Hi weesing,

I'm not in Richmond area, so my school registered are near South-east Vancouver.

Also my wife just did a search for preschool / daycare in west side for this fall and funny enough many of them said the queue is already over 50... some even say 100 on the waiting list ( class size = 25 ).
