A controversial six-storey, wood-frame structure went up in a spectacular blaze late Tuesday in Richmond, B.C., lighting the night sky and burning partly beyond the reach of fire crews.

The housing project was the first of its kind in B.C.

Even before construction started last year, Richmond's fire department warned its ladders weren't high enough to reach the top of the all-wood structure.

The building burned for more than five hours before being brought under control, CBC videographer Chris Anaka said from the scene.

Firefighters used a large water cannon to combat the blaze.

"When I arrived, it was quite shocking," Anaka said. "You know, a huge fire right in the middle of a residential neighbourhood."

There were some problems with spot fires on the roofs of surrounding homes, he said, but they were brought under control.

More than 40 firefighters were involved in battling the three-alarm fire.

Initially, nearby homes were evacuated, but people were soon allowed to return, Anaka said.

No injuries were reported.

The developer must have purchased construction insurance ga mah, so it'll be the construction company footing the bill. The buyers might have the option to withdraw from the purchase any time before residential permits are issued, so they may not be stuck yet.

Fire trunks were still there ~10am today, spraying water to the building. There were still a lot of smoke coming out from the site.
