If he has an expired Canadian passport, the passport itself is the proof of his citizenship. I don't think he will be rejected by customs for entering Canada. Instead, I would worry whether the airline will allow him boarding. Well, just make couple phone call to aireline and Canada customs.

In worst case, just renew the passport.
