I think distance one use to view things in general is the biggest factor. If you always look far, then near sighteness is less probable. If you always look at things that are close, then there's higher risk for near sightedness.
HK people are more prone to near sightedness is because space is always small. Your TV is closer, your walls are closer, people have to sit closer, there are less windows to look out of, etc. Even if you are outdoor, you will be looking at a building couple hundred meters away instead of looking at mountains hundreds of kilometers away. Heck, you don't even get to see the sky sometimes in HK.....
Actually, I started to realize that I need glasses since F.2. But then, I only wear it during classes. Since then the "degree" almost never changes. So now, in most cases I don't wear except driving. All my sun glasses are prescription lens.
