Happy Cow said IF you can fix at 4%, then mortgage is a good option. Obviously as you guys pointed out, you can't fix it at 4%. Hence mortgage is not a good option.
Just merely from this post, I can see how people blindly think that buying houses is always a positive, and that my observation as outlined in my previous post is quite accurate.
I don't know why you people think Happy Cow is a youngster. The investment wisdom he demonstrated from his posts is one of the best I have seen from almost any LYK who have posted. Investing yourself is always going to be the best investment you can ever make. It's the most liquid and least susceptible to depreciation and macro economic conditions. Possibly some reference to Buffet's interview from last November also~
In terms of assets, commodities is also probably going to be a good bet. Houses, at current valuation have very low alpha IMO. I think the financial professor in the Globe and Mail video that CP posted have it quite right on. There's an emotional attachment into buying houses, hence over-inflating and producing this euphoria on real estate prices. The negative stigma associated with rental is exactly what makes rent a better proposition than buying, at least for a lot more situations than we traditionally suspect. |
