IMO 趙紫陽 is just too optimistic. No guns, no power but a title, and he choose to backup the students with his conscience....

一九九八年六四天安門事件中，因反對武力鎮壓而遭軟禁長達十五年的中共前總書記趙紫陽，於元月十七日病逝。

趙紫陽生於一九一九年，河南滑縣人，初中畢業。一九三八年加入中國共產黨。抗日戰爭期間，在冀魯豫邊區擔任縣委和地委書記，歸為鄧小平系統。

中共建立政權後，趙紫陽歷任廣東省委書記、廣東軍區政委。文化大革命期間，遭紅衛兵以「走資本主義反動派路線」批鬥。一九七一年復出，據說是周恩來保護的結果，其後歷任內蒙古自治區委書記、廣東省委書記、四川省委書記、成都軍區政委。

趙紫陽擔任四川省委書記期間，突破中共執政幾十年來的禁忌，大膽進行農村經濟改革，使古稱「天府之國」但當時卻貧窮不堪的農民初得溫飽，城鄉人民的生活有了顯著提高。於是，「要吃糧，找紫陽」的美譽傳遍大江南北，趙紫陽成為全國公認的改革先鋒。

由於這些輝煌的政績，趙紫陽一九七九年升任中共政治局委員、一九八○年為政治局常委，同年四月擔任國務院副總理，九月成為總理。

一九八六年底，中國大陸發生大規模學潮，中共黨內元老與保守派合計於一九八七年元月罷黜總書記胡耀邦，由趙紫陽代理總書記兼國務院總理。一九八七年中共十三大時趙紫陽真除總書記，並擔任中共中央軍委第一副主席。

一九八九年胡耀邦過世，北京再度出現大規模民主運動，最後演變為天安門血腥鎮壓六四事件，趙紫陽因反對派軍鎮壓，被控「分裂黨、支持動亂」，而於當年十三屆四中全會被撤銷職務，遭軟禁直至病歿。

If he did not have any 政績, how would him be able to be a national leader? What you showed here is not what he achieved when he was the national leader.
