You are funny. What is it so wrong to NOT feel shameful to request EI? If you feel shameful of getting EI, that's your choice. But there is not fair to say people wrong.

I don't care what treatment I get in the process of getting EI. That won't change the fact that I'm getting my own $ and I'm 100% not shameful about it.

first, ei and welfare are under two different programs.  
second,  i don't think anyone need to feel shame of collecting either one, if they contributed to the society in the past.  except the one who only complain and never contribute to the society, yes, those one should go to the moon. because no one will like anyone like this in his/her country.

i think it is a little bit too much.  yes, you worked hard in your life, but it doesn't mean that guy doesn't work hard.  he mentioned he has applied so many jobs, just no luck.  sometimes, people will hire 阿婆 rather than a middle age guy, since they know 阿婆 is looking for long term job, but middle age guy will move to a better job if he has the chance.  have you ever experience of sending over 50+ resumes with no reply.  even mcdonald doesn't hire you.  sometimes it is luck as well.  he didn't prepare himself in the past, but it doesn't mean he doesn't want to work.
i more believe you work hard and you make it - you have luck.  you work hard and you don't make it - you have no luck.
