For your info.  They are both prime lens:
A lens with a fixed focal length is a prime lens, vs a zoom lens.

If I would to compare my 35mm vs 50mm vs 85mm on my FF, I use my 50mm macro more than the 85mm, but I would probably use the 50mm lots less if it isn't a 1/2 life size macro.

Even if you say you are planing to buy something in Christmas, still 7 weeks too go .. WAY WAY WAY too early to think now ..  

Unless you are going to buy something next day or two, or next week ..  otherwise ....

Just like I am not rushing to think what car to buy for my grand son now ..

FOCAL length is NOT any lens at all ..   it is a measurement ..  

Just like ..   6 inch .  7 inch ..   which is a Banana ?  they both not banana, they both are the measurement for LENGTH ...   

A lens with fixed focal length ..  is Prime lens ..  doesn't matter LF  MF   FF   APS  or APC  whatever format ...

Just go chapter, buy a whatever photography book .. etc ..  for just $15 or so ..

記得第一次接觸135相机時,前輩教導就由50mm標準鏡頭學起, 50mm標準鏡頭在view finder裹面看到的就和眼睛看到的相近. 對初學者來說50mm lens 因為無變形的现象,亦沒有tele lens把境像拉近的效果,而且長境頭容易手震,我們就可以專心學習相片的構图等等技巧.
因為貓說是第一次買DSLR,我以為catpiano介紹他買標準鏡頭, 原來prime lens=定焦鏡頭.我的英文實在差.
話說回來如果配一支100mm在non-FF机,對我等初學者來說是否適合?
請多多包函.

我準備買嗰部機係kit 嚟既，跟埋鏡嚟架喇。
我有諗過買支定焦鏡，可能係50mm f/1.4。但係要睇我幾時需要用到f/2 或者大過f/2 先會考慮去買佢。
而本身個plan 係先用kit lens，跟住三年內再加長短zoom 各一。咁就可以由16mm包到上200mm 喇…

5D MKII?? coz...I think I remember seeing you say something about the kit lens 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM.  Just my guess~~~~
