Honestly I am quite afraid to drive when the ground is frosty in the morning with my summer tire... and I will have them changed to winter soon. (when I get the time)

Still, the fact is, even at 7c or 5c, no matter summer or all season tire, still offer SOME/not bad  ...

I work in Minnesota sometimes, where it's as cold, if not colder, and as much snow, if not more, than Calgary. Nobody even sweat about winter tires there. Snow's just so dry that even my rental's crappy tire provided excellent traction.

Vancouver is about ice and wet snow driving, very dangerous stuff. Because of the mild temp and lack of serious powder volume, people tend to under estimate Vancouver's winter road conditions. This misconception often causes big mistakes!

When speccing out winter tires for Vancouver, try paying more attention to attributes pertaining to ice driving opposed to snow driving. Stuff like how well the tire digs into snow, how well it clear snow out of it's tread, or even very low temperature performance isn't really as critical for Vancouver driving.

Aiya .. my friend has been living in Minne for year..  winter there .. not near as bad here la.. ( she was from Edmonton )

Actually, in Edmonton, witner driving isn't that bad, as most the time, -20c or lower, and pack of snow ..

Problem for Calgary, as one of the worst witner driving city, since it could be -30c one day, then + 2 or 3 degree the next day, (snow melt, water/ice all over) then back to -30c the day after, and snow .. etc and etc ..  

Which means ..  could be PURE ICE under snow, then ice, then snow, then rain .. on and on ..  very tricky!

I drive in Vancouver once a while, it isn't that bad, (to me) however, you dont know who is the C9 in front of behind you! (similar problem here too!)

As you said, it is important to pay more attention, and more alert ... try to look ahead at least 4 or 5 cars ..

For cremedelacreme case, having a set of summer tire, a new set of all-seasons and then go with another set of snow?  My recommendation is still stay with all-seasons and park the car when condition isn't right.

those tires didnt look too many grooves for winter, u need channels for water or snow to displace or sink in so u have good contact with the ground.

last evening.. still many Porsche RR/MR, Ferrari, Lambo, Aston etc on the roads..... few hr later ..  all white ...  20 cm snow .. - 13c ...  lol
