Classes aim to help older drivers review their habits

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) 2009-11-17 16:00 METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - BCAA is rolling out the first of its mature drivers classes this week.

The classes aim at helping older drivers review their habits behind the wheel and make changes to help reduce risks on the road.  They also teach about problems associated with age that may impact our driving ability.

The first class in the Lower Mainland will be hosted by the RCMP at the Lynn Valley Library in North Vancouver on Thursday night.

Learn about the changes that can occur as we age and interfere with our ability to drive safely.

I think part of the problem is ppl gradually get old. They may not realize that their response is WAY slower than they were 20 or 30 years ago.

I doubt if any senior will acctually admit that they need a driving lesson.

they expect you yield for them eventhough they are doing illegal turn.  because they are senior.
beside response slower, sometimes they don't know what they are doing.
once, an old lady ran in to a shop in north vancouver.  she asked us where was she.  she was in downtown and tried to drive home( she lived in burnaby), she had no idea why she ended up in north vancouver, so we called the police and the police sent her home.

btw, does bcaa still offer defensive driving course?

It's very dangerous for senior like that to drive! the BCAA site actually has information on "alternative from driving" and "planning ahead". Suggesting public transit, walking, taxi, and other community service arrangement. it's way safer for them and for other ppl if they stay off the road!!!
I have seen and heard too many accident caused by senior.

My mom won't drive unless she knows the area and when the road condition is good. She is not that old yet but I have told her to just give me a call if she needs me to give her a lift any day. (I don't live with her) And they can walk to grocery shopping with easy so she doesn't have to force herself to drive.
My dad, I said if I found out that he is still driving, I will report to the police and let them take his license away. He is old and his medical condition doesn't allow him to drive safely.

as you said,  no one believes s/he is not capable until s/he involves in the accident ma.
