OKANAGAN (NEWS1130) - A Kelowna woman has B.C.'s first confirmed case of West Nile virus this year.

Dr. Robert Parker with Interior Health says a blood test confirmed it last week, but the woman is said to be doing fine after suffering muscle aches and pains. "She did not have any of the neurological symptoms, the meningitis symptoms. And even for the aches and the fevers she had, my understanding is she is fully recovered now."

He says most people who get infected don't show any symptoms. "If they don't go see their doc, and they don't get a blood test, they wouldn't know whether they have West Nile Virus or not. And for most cases, it doesn't matter, because they get mild muscle aches and pains. There is no treatment for West Nile, and people would just get better on their own."

Parker says they expected to get a few human cases this summer, but people can take some basic precautions to protect themselves. "People going out for evening walks, it's good to wear the DEET-containing mosquito repellent and long shirt and pants, if you can.  But take mosquito bite precautions, especially at dusk.  The risk isn't really high now, it's fading because in September we know it gets cooler and mosquitoes bite less."

Interior Health says three people were found to be infected with the virus last year.
