NEW DELHI, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- In another setback to the preparation for the Commonwealth Games, the major part of an under- construction flyover bridge near the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the Indian capital collapsed Tuesday, injuring 23 workers on spot, Deputy Commissioner of Police H.G.S. Dhaliwal confirmed.

Five of them are said to be in critical condition and have been admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Center, while four others have been rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital.

The bridge was meant to be used by visitors during the Commonwealth Games which will be held in New Delhi from Oct. 3 to Oct. 14.

Fire brigades used crane and bulldozer to clean up the debris and searched for survivors trapped under the rubble, according to TV footage.

Earlier media reports said 26 workers were injured in the incident.

"The mishap happened when the laborers were putting concrete mix at a portion of the bridge. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of five are said to be serious," a police official said earlier.

Commonwealth Games organizing committee members have rushed to the spot, he added.

The accident is apparently another blow to the organizers of the Commonwealth Games, already hit by allegation of corruption and mismanagement.

New Zealand and some other participating countries, as well as the Commonwealth Games Federation, have severely criticized the organizers for the living conditions of the athletes village.

Nothing wrong with the bridge design, looks like the cable didn't hookup nicely...

I assume most labours are working on the bridge deck at time of concrete pouring, if they are wearing hard hats they should be okay...
