Laura Szendrei killed over the weekend
"I'm sure you love hell." That is just one of the comments on the memorial page for Laura Szendrei.
Some people are posting pornographic images, while others are posting pictures of other girls, bloody and badly beaten. There is also another case where someone photoshopped a picture of Szendrei to include a baseball bat.
Delta Police are warning people not to believe what they read on social media sites like Facebook, and add they are looking for a 'person of interest' in her death.
Sergeant Sharlene Brooks says they're looking for a man between the ages of 16 and 25, with a medium build, wearing a white short sleeved shirt and cargo style shorts. She adds the man was in the area at the time of the assault and may have more information. Police stress he is not considered a suspect.
There have also been warnings from police and some disturbing stories from parents. One worried mother -- who didn't want to give her name -- tells News1130 she's heard of several random attacks in Delta and they've warned their son to stay away from that particular area.
Brooks says they're looking into reports of other incidents. "We have had in the past couple of weeks a couple of different incidents where young people have had pepper spray, either in possession or sprayed." They haven't made any connections yet, but she warns students and parents to be careful. "Walk with a friend or in small groups, walk in well lit areas, stay in high-pedestrian, high-traffic areas."
Szendrei was attacked in the wooded area of Mackie Park at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. She was taken to hospital, but died of her injuries Sunday morning with her family by her side.
An autopsy is expected sometime this week. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Delta Police at 604.946.4411.
