Be the first to Comment 3 Recommendation(s) VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A year after his death, the Olympic cauldron has been temporarily relit and Thurlow Plaza has been officially renamed in honour of Jack Poole.
A large crowd gathered at the square beside the new Vancouver Convention Centre to see the Premier and Poole's widow Darlene relight the cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza.
As head of the VANOC bid committee Poole played a large part in bringing the Olympics to Vancouver, but died before the games started. He died of pancreatic cancer on October 23, 2009, just hours after the torch relay started in Greece.
This woman says she took a moment to think of Poole as the cauldron lit up. "We live in a complex that Jack Poole Built. I wanted to come. It was very emotional."
For this woman, the lighting is a chance to feel the Olympic spirit again, and get a little closer to the cauldron. "There's no fence. It is a much more personal experience. You get the feel the heat off the flames, and it's pretty amazing."
There is also a permanent plaque at the site in Poole's honour. The cauldron will stay lit until midnight Saturday. |
