VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The VPD warned you yesterday about leaving gifts in your car, but today Surrey Mounties have a warning about a seasonal type of car thefts.
Most of us have gone outside and started the car to warm it up before we leave. But over the winter months, Constable Peter Neilly with Surrey RCMP says the number of cars stolen with keys still in the ignition can go up by as much as 150 per cent.
He advises everyone, "Take a drive down any residential street on a cold morning and you'll quite often see cars left running in the driveway. Someone walking by who's not usually an auto thief might see it as a bit of a crime of opportunity."
If you are warming your car up on a cold morning, Neilly says make sure it's secured before you go back in the house.
