在日本旅行租手機 or 租 SIM card? 日本旅行

Hi there,

planning to travel Tokyo area for one week in April. Any recommedations on cellphone rentals or SIM card rentals in Japan?  I do have a 3G cell phone myself. I want to have a cell phone available just in case.

成田機場領完行李出去轉左到北翼有好多個租sim card的counter，價錢唔會差好遠，唔使reservation。

There is a lot of information from the backpackers forum but they are comparing roaming charges of Telco in Taiwan and renting it in Japan. Some said it's not cheaper to rent a SIM. I am sure it's cheaper compare to paying for roaming charges to Telco here.

I did rent a SIM card back in 2008 and the cost was about $20 for around 10 days or so...
Receiving call was free and I seldom dail out. (for emergency only).

But I forgot which company I used. I was using an unlocked 3G cell phone from HK. And I made reservation online via a website.

what about iphone? Can we bring our unlocked iphone to Japan? Around how much for data?

    iPhone will work in Japan. My friend did that. But then I'm not sure how much is the data...

Data usage around 1500yen per day according to Softbank jp. I personally haven't used this plan before, but hope it's helpful!

well.. I would rather just use Wifi if possible from hotel or friend or other restaurant if available.

Oh please....  Turn off your phone and enjoy the trip.  Your 3G should be good for emergency use.

data is useless if you are just staying in areas like Tokyo or Osaka, most hotels have internet and many restaurants have Wifi after ipad was launched.

my wife & i have been travel in Japan with and without data, if you have certain Japanese apps on your iphone, you can explore a whole lot more cool restaurants and places like a local, plus coupons. And we need data to check trains & Shinkansen at the last minute because we always change our schedules.
