I would suggest that you buy yen banknotes from Vancouver Bullion & Currency Exchange. Their rate is very good (about 1% profit compared to rate on xe.com which is reasonable in Vancouver) - any other money changers will charge you 2 to 3% over XE rate. If you use credit card in Japan, the card issuer will also inflate the exchange rate by at least 2 to 3% and you won't know the rate till you get your statement a month later. By spending cash you know your cost of yen beforehand and it helps you to stay in budget.
You can check VBCE's daily rate at this link:

I think they have the best yen rate hands down.

If you are going to China, the best thing is just buy US$ in Vancouver and  change to RMB in any Bank of China branch when you arrive there - the rate is much much better.

I buy from a place called Pacific Currency. It is under the Marriot airport hotel in Richmond. (next to Enterprise Rental). Their rate is kind of negotiable if you are doing in large amount (CAD$1000+)

I also buy currency from Vancouver Bullion.  I presume you will be doing a fair amount of shopping in Japan.  Traveling with a load of cash is always risky.  I usually exchange just enough for getting around, and then take cash from ATM when needed.  Most bank just use the daily selling rate.

Why buy the $US first? In China, even the hotels will exchange $CAN into RMB.

For Japan, I usually do the exchange here, even some forums say it could be a little better rate in Japan. I think it's more convenient to have some yen ready on hand whenever need instant use, rather to search for a place to do the exchange when I'm in "overseas". Or you can exchange a small amount here first and a larger amount in Japan. And don't think Japanese can speak English well, even at the international airport. lol
I usually go to the one outside Osaka (TnT), called Kingmark.
