VICTORIA (NEWS1130) - BC Ferries is bringing back fuel surcharges. It'll cost about a dollar more to take a car on a ferry between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.

The cost of taking the ferry will go up by 2.5 per cent on major routes between the Mainland and Vancouver Island and five per cent hike for minor routes.

Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries says they have to make this move to deal with the skyrocketing cost of gas.

"This fiscal year we are expecting to spend over $120 million on fuel. To put it in perspective, back in 2003, we spent only $45.9 million," she explains.

BC Ferries fuel surcharges are nothing new. "Thankfully, it's been a few years since a fuel surcharge was implemented.  We actually had fuel rebates in 2009 and 2010. The last time we had a fuel surcharge was back in 2008," Marshall points out.

The corporation will introduce fuel rebates for customers if the price of gas comes down.
