I tried it back in March. Hotels and meals are all around 3 or 4 stars rating in my opinion. The tour was quite good, just that about 3 hours per day are devoted to shopping in some chosen shops. Fortunately, they don't force people to buy stuff. It's a great deal overall.
I just came back 3 days ago from Beijing trip. We stayed at Beijing Double tree Hilton Hotel, It claims they are 5 stars. The hotel is good it also comes with buffet breakfast. The breakfast was
the best meal of the day. The other meals were terrible and unacceptable. Every meals had ten dishes of food, most of them were vegetable. However every restaurant supplied the same kind of dishes, only changed for one of two kind of different and eight of them were the same. The food quality were bad. Our tour had 36 members , over 20 people got sick of food poison at the last two days. One member gone to emergency. Three white men got sick first and they just bought their own food without ate with us. The Peking duck is bad, Vancouver is much better. The sight seeings were good, a lot to see. But don't buy anything that they suggested. They were more expensive as compared to buy it out side. My wife spent 1000 yen on tea but we found out we could get it less than 300 yen in supermarket. Yes, they don't forced you to buy but they had that kind of magic to charm you to open your wallet. There were a lot of walking during the trip everyday, you will be very tired at night. You also need to pay 500 yen extra for 4 shows that may be you don't like. Over all for under $100 of 8 days tour, what you can complain? My advice is eat carefully.
The tour guide doesn't push at all. He just told us where to go next and what kind of shops we will visit. Then He disappeared when we go inside the shops and come back to pick up us about one and half hour, some time 2 hours depends on what kind of shops. For example Tung Yan Tong medicine and feet message were more than 2 hours.
Because some Chinese women bring their white husbands. I was told those white men paid more than what we paid for. It is not just north American Chinese, I met some people came from Australia and England as well.
RE: $49 tour in Shanghai and other cities for 9 days
I booked the $99 Beijing tour end December. I heard a lot of ppl already went. Can anyone share their experience - apart from "tsawwassen" saying the meals were terrible and unacceptable and that over 20 ppl had food posioning, this is very scary. Does anyone have good comments about this tour - I'm stating to regret booking this tour now.
Nothing to fear, just eat careful. The tour is not bad at all. You don't need to buy anything if you don't want to.Somebody will buy, don't hesitate , enjoy the trip. And take a lot of photo.
