Victoria, Moncton next to be hit by postal strike

OTTAWA — Postal workers in Victoria and Moncton, N.B., will be the next to walk off the job as labour negotiations continue between the union and Canada Post.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers confirmed Monday that the two cities will go on strike for 24 hours, starting at midnight local time on Tuesday. The strike rotation has already taken place in Winnipeg, Hamilton and Montreal since last week.

"In Victoria and Moncton, the public has suffered deterioration in postal service due to Canada Post's changes to the way mail gets processed and delivered," said the union's John Bail, referring to what a statement released Monday called the consolidation of postal plants and the convoluted processes that have been created for the shipment and sorting of the mail.

Added the union's Jeff Callaghan: "In Moncton, we have not only seen the restructuring of postal plants, but also job cuts that hurt our local communities."

The union said Canada Post continues to refuse to address the union's outstanding issues, including health and safety.

Its statement comes in the wake of Canada Post rejecting the union's latest offer Monday afternoon, saying it was "too expensive."

The Crown corporation said the latest offer still burdens the system with major costs and does not offer realistic solutions to declining amounts of mail, increasing competition, the rise of electronic mail and other problems.

Canada Post said it has also agreed to withdraw an earlier offer to create more part-time positions as a means to deal with dwindling amount of mail. It said it withdrew this to entice the union to "address the issues" plaguing the system.

Despite the rotating interruptions taking place across the country, the corporation said most of the postal network continues to operate. Mail is being accepted and processed in all locations affected by the rotating strike.

Canada Post rejected the latest offer put forward by the postal workers' union Monday afternoon, as employees prepare to continue rotating strikes across the country.
