VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - New Westminster police officer Jeffrey Klassen will not serve any jail time for his 2009 assault on newspaper deliveryman Firoz Khan.
His conditional discharge includes a year of probation and 100 hours of community service. He is not to have any contact with Khan.
Constable Jeffrey Klassen was found guilty in April. He made a tearful apology during a sentencing hearing last month.
Klassen's lawyer had wanted a conditional discharge, while Crown was asking for 30 to 60 days in jail.
Another officer involved in the assault outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel in January 2009, Griffin Gillan, had already been handed a conditional sentence.
During Klassen's sentencing the judge said the off duty officer tried to intervene in what he thought was a lawful arrest, and did not act maliciously.
Firoz Khan says he does forgive Klassen and wasn't surprised by the sentence.
