WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - How would you like the equivalent of three swimming pools worth of raw sewage dumped in your neighbourhood? It's happened in an upscale area of West Vancouver.
A pipe burst at the 45 year old Gleneagle Pump Station No. 4, likely to the dismay of people living on Marine Drive and especially the 5500 block of Gallagher Place.
Paul Archibald is Utilities Manager for Metro Vancouver. "The smell! Yes, unfortunately, I'm sure residences in the area noticed it. Certainly there was a fair bit of flow down the road toward this catch basin. I'm sure the odour was pretty prevalent too. But I want to emphasize we were able to stop this flow within two hours which is pretty good."
All 60,000 litres of the sewage has gone into a ditch that flows into Burrard Inlet. So as for the environment, Archibald says, "We have commissioned a sampling program to go around to the various areas that may have been contaminated."
Repairs and cleanup are underway. All of the Gleneagle pump stations are scheduled to undergo upgrades. |
