VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Mounties are asking for witnesses to last Friday's shooting near Powell and Gore to contact them.

A man with a machete was killed during a confrontation with two Vancouver police officers.

The RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been appointed to this case. Sgt. Peter Thiessen says several witnesses have come forward, but there could be others out there who have vital information.

"We continue to do neighbourhood inquiries in that area, with the hope that others will come forward once they hear some further information and the need [to] speak with them to determine exactly what occured."

The man killed has been identified as 48-year-old Darrell Elroy Barnes of Vancouver. Sgt. Thiessen says investigators also need to speak with people who might have seen or talked to Barnes in the hours before he was killed.

"We know for a fact that he was carrying a machete. As a result of that, two VPD officers did attend, confronted Mr. Barnes. Those two officers initially used less-than-lethal force, which was discharging several rounds from a beanbag shotgun, which then escalated to them discharging their firearms."

Anyone who was in the area and saw what happened is encouraged to call the IHIT Tip Line at 1-800-551-4448, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
