VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - You have every reason to be enthusiastic about getting to your destination this BC Day long weekend, but ICBC is urging you to do so carefully.
The corporation wants to build a new, safer reputation for what is traditionally BC's most dangerous driving weekend. Adam Grossman with ICBC tells us, across the province we record an average of nearly 2,000 crashes, more than 500 injuries, and three fatalities over the August long weekend.
"Those numbers are shockingly high, and hopefully it's something we can all help bring down by making a slight difference in how we approach long road trips over the weekend," he says.
He believes some small changes can put a big dent in those stats, like not driving when you're tired. "It stalls our reaction time, it decreases our awareness, and impairs our judgments. All of those factors together can make summer long weekends particularly dangerous on the roads.
Grossman recommends not driving at night when your body would normally want to be asleep. He adds respecting speed limits, staying away from cell phones, and wearing seatbelts are equally important. |
