VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Canada Line is already handling 116,000 passengers a day, but TransLink says it can handle more growth on the system.

This week train frequency will increase ahead of the back to school rush that will see thousands more flood the platforms between Richmond and Vancouver.

"We hadn't expected this kind of ridership for another couple of years, but during the Olympics, the Canada Line with all 20 of its trains in service routinely handled well over 200,000 riders a day," explains TransLink's Ken Hardie.

He says there is plenty of room to add more trains to the system if that's needed to handle growth that takes ridership beyond those Olympic numbers.

"Your next option is simply to buy more trains and put more of them in service at once, and you can take care of future demand for many, many years just by doing that."

On Wednesday the number of Canada Line trains running during peak hours will increase from 14 to 16, and peak hours are also being extended. On weekdays, peak service levels will start a half-hour earlier at 6:30 a.m., and will run an hour later until 7 p.m.

On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, peak service levels will continue to start at their regular times - 9:00 a.m. Saturdays and 10:00 a.m. Sundays and holidays - but will run an hour later each day until 7 p.m.
