VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - If you want to enjoy a campfire in the wilderness this weekend, stay away from Lillooet, Merritt, and Whistler. The first bans of the season are now in place and officers will be out in the woods.
The danger rating in and around Merritt and Lillooet is now deemed extreme, so no open burning is allowed.
Fire Information Officer Karlie Shaughnessy says they'll be patrolling Christina Lake and nearby areas, where fires are still allowed. "Failure to properly extinguish their campfire can result in a $345 fine. If their campfire does escape and causes a wildfire, they may be held liable for all suppression costs and damages."
She adds they've found 26 fires abandoned around there.
Whistler Fire Chief Rob Whitton explains you need put the flames out in his neck of the woods. "No fires allowed whatsoever, even at the campsites. The use of barbeques in parks is still fine, as long as they're dealt with appropriately, and I'm talking about the briquette-type barbeques." |
