VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - TransLink is preparing for this season's huge spike in ridership, and commuters are being warned about the big fall transit crunch.

"It's always the same every year; we get a big boost in ridership when we head into the fall.  Last year for example, there was an increase of five per cent from August to September," says TransLink's Drew Snider.

He tells News1130 this year's ridership numbers are surprisingly high so far.

"When you look at the way the trends have been going for the first half of this year, even counting the 2010 Olympics, which we thought had given us a major surge in transit right there, we're still ahead of where we were last year."

Snider adds commuters can expect the college and university routes to be especially busy this fall.

"U-Pass BC is now extended to all publicly-funded post-secondary institutions, so those transit routes will likely see much higher usage."
